Since I sell both solid and semi-hollow fine jewelry, I hear this question a lot. Since I believe each type has significance in a collection for various reasons, I personally collect both types. The difference between solid and semi-hollow jewelry

I define solid gold items as jewelry that is entirely solid and composed of carat gold.  Semi-hollow jewelry has a hollow interior, like a "tube," but is still composed of genuine, carat gold that hasn't been plated.  A solid and semi-hollow version of the same item of jewelry can frequently be made, and they will both have the same appearance.  You won't realize how much the piece weighs and costs until you hold it in your hands!  It will frequently have dents from wear if it is an antique semi-hollow piece.  Unless you really never wear the item, denting cannot be avoided!

Reasons for my preference for solid gold:

• Remains incredibly durable over time, even if you don't give it the best care.

When is solid gold my preference?

• I like solid gold better than semi-hollow gold when purchasing bracelets and rings.  Because I frequently knock bracelets and rings and bang my hands, these are my two favorite options.  This isn't to say that I never purchase semi-hollow bracelets or rings; I'm just pickier, require that they look AMAZING, and take better care of them (i.e., wear them only on rare occasions).

Why semi-hollow jewelry appeals to me:

• Not as costly as real gold, but still genuine gold
• Weigh less, allowing you to wear bold, large pieces without feeling heavy (particularly great for earrings)
•  If I want to follow a certain trend but cannot afford to buy a solid gold version, I prefer to get it in semi-hollow

Semi-hollow items appeal to me when:

When purchasing earrings and necklaces (bold chains), I don't believe I own a single solid gold earring since I find the weight of earrings to be really bothersome!  I would prefer to be able to wear bright dangles, semi-hollow hoops, etc. for a number of hours each day without experiencing ear pain.  I'm usually wanting to get semi-hollow shoes in this category because I adore huge chains but the price of gold, solid, and bold shoes doesn't really fit my budget. I just make sure to take extra care and not sleep in them.
